COMMENTARY | Most people did not notice because they were either watching a football playoff game or doing things that one normally does on a Saturday night, but ABC News broadcast a Republican presidential debate.
Guy Benson at Townhall has a pretty good rundown about what happened. The matter does call for a number of observations.
The jabs the men vying to be the not-Romney against Mitt Romney were a little tepid and, in the case of Newt Gingrich, verging on anti-capitalistic. One gets the sense the other candidates have conceded that Romney is going to win New Hampshire; the only question is by how much. Romney seemed cool and calm under pressure, much to his benefit. He parried some inane questions by George Stephanopoulos.
Speaking of the Democratic operative turned Democratic operative pretending to be a journalist, why has he suddenly developed a fixation about contraception? Most people are under the impression the matter was settled by the Supreme Court in Griswold v. Connecticut in which the court overturned laws prohibiting contraception based on the right to privacy.
It is true the same doctrine was used to decide Roe v. Wade, which established the right of abortion which, unlike Griswold, remains controversial to this day. One could argue that if the right to privacy were called into question as a basis of overturning Roe, it could be used to overturn Griswold as well. But Romney effectively made Stephanopoulos look silly for even bring up the non issue when there are so many other, more important things to talk about-like the economy.
Ron Paul decided to take a leaf out the John Kerry's book and started boasting about his military service, while attacking those-like Gingrich-who had not served, according to the Daily Caller. The "chicken hawk" card is a rather tiresome and irrelevant thing to play, usually a desperate gambit from a man whose national security stance is untenable.
Gingrich, Perry and Santorum had solid debate performances. Gingrich especially hit it out of the park with his anti-Christian bigotry answer. Anti-Christian bigotry, especially on the part of the Obama administration, is something that is under reported by the mainstream media, but is felt keenly by believers nevertheless.
Finally, Jon Huntsman pontification in Mandarin was impressive, but was a case of showing off that proved unedifying. He should stop it.
