Cameron on 2-day tour to meet Brazilian president

David Cameron is set to promote British business in Brazil on his 2-day tour to meet Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

On Thursday, the Prime Minister admitted Britain had been "under-performing" in Brazil, with just 1.5% of imports compared to Germany's 6.4%.

He has set himself the goal of driving up UK trade links with the emerging economic giant - now sixth in the world GDP table - as part of his export-led strategy for nursing the battered UK economy into recovery.

He was joined by a 58-strong business delegation in Brazil and welcomed the signing of deals worth upwards of ?100 million for the UK, which he said would safeguard or create 3,000 jobs in Britain.

Since coming to office in 2010, Mr Cameron has made boosting exports a key foreign policy priority. Brazil is the last of the four BRIC economies he has visited, after Russia, India and China, and he has now been to all of the G20 countries with the exception of Argentina.

With Rio de Janeiro inheriting the title of Olympic city from London, Mr Cameron is keen to ensure that the expertise gained in staging this summer's Games is put to good use in winning 2016 contracts for the UK.

On Thursday night he viewed plans for the proposed Olympic Park, which will be constructed to a masterplan drawn up by London-based Aecom, who performed a similar role for the 2012 Games.

British companies are also pursuing contracts to help stage the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil, with London's Bluecube announcing it will provide seating for the Castelao stadium in the city of Fortaleza.

Mr Cameron is fly to capital Brasilia to meet Ms Rousseff at the presidential Planalto Palace on the last leg of his trip - which also took in two days in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly and appear on the Late Show with David Letterman.

On the agenda for talks with Ms Rousseff will be Brazil's growing energy sector, which Mr Cameron believes provides an opportunity to export UK expertise and skills gained in 40 years of drilling in the North Sea.

Last Western detainee at Gitmo returns to Canada

(AP) ? The last Western detainee held at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. military prison has returned to Canada after a decade in custody and has been transferred to a maximum security prison in Canada where he awaits parole, Canada's public safety minister said Saturday.

Vic Toews said that 26-year-old Omar Khadr arrived at a Canadian military base on a U.S. government plane early Saturday and was transferred to the Millhaven maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario.

Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan and was eligible to return to Canada from Guantanamo Bay last October under terms of a plea deal.

Khadr was 15 when he was captured in 2002 in Afghanistan, and has spent a decade at the Guantanamo prison set up on the U.S. naval base in Cuba to hold suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. He received an eight-year sentence in 2010 after being convicted of throwing a grenade that killed Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer during a 2002 firefight .

Toews noted that the U.S. government initiated the transfer and suggested that Canada had little choice but to accept him under Canadian law.

"Omar Khadr is a known supporter of the al-Qaida terrorist network and a convicted terrorist," Toews said. "Omar Khadr was born in Canada and is a Canadian citizen. As a Canadian citizen, he has a right to enter Canada after the completion of his sentence."

John Norris, Khadr's Canadian lawyer, has said Khadr would be eligible for parole as early as the spring of 2013. It will be up to Canada's national parole board to release him, Toews said.

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Toews said.

Toews said that Omar Khadr's mother and sister "have openly applauded" his father's "crimes and terrorist activities" and noted that Omar has had "little contact with Canadian society and will require substantial management in order to ensure safe integration in Canada."

Khadr's family and lawyer did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment about his release.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government had long refused to request the return of Khadr, the youngest detainee held at Guantanamo. The reluctance is partly due to suspicions about the Khadr family, which has been called "the first family of terrorism."

Defense attorneys have said Khadr was pushed into fighting the Americans in Afghanistan by his father, Ahmed Said Khadr, an alleged al-Qaida financier whose family stayed with Osama bin Laden briefly when Omar Khadr was a boy.

The Egyptian-born father was killed in 2003 when a Pakistani military helicopter shelled the house where he was staying with senior al-Qaida operatives.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed off on Khadr's transfer in April. Panetta said in Ottawa earlier this year that sending Khadr back to Canada would be an important step because it would serve as an example to other detainees who are looking to return to their home countries or other places. Some Guantanamo detainees have been reluctant to agree to plea deals after noting that Khadr had remained in Guantanamo despite being eligible to leave since last October.

The U.S. Defense Department confirmed the transfer in a statement and said 166 detainees remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.

Suzanne Nossel, Amnesty International USA Executive Director, said the Guantanamo prison should finally be closed. She said Canada now has a chance to right what she called the many wrongs against Khadr and called for an investigation into Khadr's allegations of torture.

"Given the Obama administration's glacial pace towards closing the U.S.-controlled detention center, little and late though it is, today's news represents progress," Nossell said in a statement. "Khadr was imprisoned at the age of 15, subjected to ill-treatment and then prosecuted in a military commissions system that does not meet international fair trial standards. Growing up in Guantanamo and facing more prison time in Canada, his future remains uncertain."

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo concept is a plug-in shooting brake

The shooting break -- basically a long and low sporty station wagon -- isn't exactly a huge hit in the United States, but in Europe Porsche is pushing that body style to a new level with the Sport Turismo. It's a concept of what it believes a future, hatchback version of its Panamera four-seater grand tourer might look like. But, look beyond the dramatic styling and distinctive LED headlights, and there's plenty of tech to be spotted. Details after the break.

Where To Find A Good Electrician: Web Based Local Directory ...

One of the primary tasks you should prioritise when you?re moving to a new home is to get a good electrician. You?ll need a skilled professional who will install as well as customise the electrical systems, check active electrical fixtures, make maintenance and enhancements, and make recommendations and support particular to your needs. Hiring a trusted electrician will help you take care of faulty wiring and electrical system issues and set up security lighting, ensuring you?ll be living in a much safer residence. Electrical installers help you create a more beautiful home, too-only a licensed professional can help you set up those pretty lights that will help create the mood in your living and entertaining rooms.

Nevertheless, finding a reliable electrician, house experts admit, can be rigorous and time-consuming, especially when you?re also busy with chores of transferring and organising. Will you need to comb through the yellow pages once again? Call the neighbours (that you have yet to encounter) and ask tips? Use the internet and hop from one plumbing website to another? With the accurate methods and wise solutions, a wise home owner like you can certainly soon find a reputable tradesman that gives good quality services, fast solution and affordable charges at your new location.

One of many typical and tested ways of choosing a local contractor is to ask for recommendations. Asking neighbours for suggestions is a good excuse to begin discussions and present yourself to them in a more natural way. However this works only if you have the the perfect time to hang out with fresh encounters while still organizing your own property. Most people who?re still settling down would want to deal with moving concerns first before making time for coffee and chit-chat.

A great way to make the task easier and more comprehensive is to get a local installer with an business online directory. Search for a site with impressive features so you can customise your search without having to take too much time from your busy schedule. Simply pick the kind of business, identify where you are, and identify the range of the business head office from your house. In just a few seconds, you?ll get a summary of electrician specialists that satisfy your requirements.

The ideal online directory services are those with added features, including SMS and e mail buttons. This way, you?ll only be dealing with just one page when you make phone calls and ask for rates from several contractors-a great time-saver compared to going to each local electrician?s website, reaching for your phone and also opening your own email account to send messages.

With a trusted business online directory, an electrical contractor can ensure that your property is actually risk-free, comfortable and fully functional. Turn on those cute lights, make some coffee and cake, and welcome your new neighbours to your brand new home.

An experienced electrician, Murwillumbah experts say is a quality service provider. Make sure you hire the best.

US stocks lower on consumer spending worries

Stocks fell on Friday after news that U.S. consumers spent more last month only because higher gas prices forced them to.

Even with the declines on the last trading day of the quarter, stocks were set to post small gains for the three-month period.

In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 89 points at 13,397. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 10 points at 1,438. The Nasdaq composite index fell 21 points to 3,116.

Americans spent more in August even though their income barely grew, the Commerce Department said. But the spending increase was driven by higher gasoline prices.

Investors were also worried about Spain's economy. The Spanish government announced big spending cuts on Thursday aimed at convincing potential bailout creditors and investors that it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances. But the positive momentum generated by that budget ground to a halt, as investors awaited more news, including stress test results for 14 banks due after European markets close.

Moody's, the credit rating agency, is also expected to weigh in on Spain's creditworthiness. There are concerns the government's rating will be cut to "junk" status.

Stocks finished higher in Asia on continued speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy. But the worries about Spain pushed stocks lower in Europe.

In the U.S., stocks fell in all 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Energy stocks had the biggest declines, down 1 percent.

Even with Friday's declines, the Dow was up 4 percent for the quarter, and the S&P 500 was up 5.5 percent.

"It's been a good quarter, but at least for the day we seem to be limping across the finish line," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors.

Among U.S. stocks with noteworthy moves:

? Bank of America Corp. fell 14 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $8.83 after saying it has agreed to pay $2.43 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit related to its acquisition of Merrill Lynch.

? Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. jumped 60 cents, or 8.4 percent, to $7.74 after reporting a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on Thursday night.

? Shoemaker Nike fell $1.10, or 1.1 percent, to $94.90 after saying its first-quarter net income fell 12 percent because higher sales were offset by increased ad spending. The results were better than Wall Street had expected, but investors seemed more worried about the trail ahead for Nike rather than its performance in the last quarter.

? McDonald's Corp. fell $2.02, or 2.2 percent, to $91.25 after a Janney Capital Markets cut its rating and price target, saying difficult year-ago comparisons may pressure sales at stores open at least 13 months, which is a key revenue metric for retailers.

Probability maps help sniff out food contamination

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Uncovering the sources of fresh food contamination could become faster and easier thanks to analysis done at Sandia National Laboratories' National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The study, in the International Journal of Critical Infrastructures, demonstrates how developing a probability map of the food supply network using stochastic network representation might shorten the time it takes to track down contaminated food sources.

Stochastic mapping shows what is known about how product flows through the distribution supply chain and provides a means to express all the uncertainties in potential supplier-customer relationships that persist due to incomplete information.

If used on a larger scale, such methods also might assess the vulnerability of food supplies to wide-scale, deliberate contamination.

Tracking down the source of fresh food contamination can be difficult and time-consuming. Stephen Conrad (6924) says difficulties in adequately characterizing connections and product flows among producers, distributors and suppliers can contribute to significant uncertainty in assessing the risk of foodborne illness.

"This is often a serious problem when there is an outbreak of food poisoning in a particular region and the healthcare authorities cannot quickly trace the source of the outbreak," Stephen says.

When an outbreak occurs, epidemiologists must interview affected people to track down where foodborne exposures happened. Often those interviews take place weeks after the exposure, leading to inaccurate or incomplete information and making it difficult to pinpoint a likely food culprit. Once the tainted food has been identified, investigators must trace up through the food distribution supply chain to locate the source of contamination.

"Epidemiologists involved in trace back start behind the eight ball," Stephen says. "They attempt to reconstruct the pathway the contaminated food has traveled through the distribution network well after the fact."

Even at the supply chain level, investigating how food moves through the system is daunting. Stephen says supply chains vary widely from one food marketing system and agricultural sector to another. Some supply chain parts change frequently. Even within a single agricultural sector, some parts of the food supply chain may be characterized by enduring supplier/customer relationships, while others may be market-based and highly transitory.

Even industry insiders may not understand the supply chain map. Many only know "one up and one down" -- that is, they know only their direct supplier and direct customer. Some information about customers and suppliers can be proprietary and therefore hard to get, Stephen says.

In 2011, sprouts were the focus of a serious E. coli outbreak in Europe, but tracing contaminated products to their source proved difficult.

Sandia researchers applied the stochastic mapping technique to test data from the fresh sprout sector in a single state in the U.S., using a case study of the edible seed sprout distribution system as the basis of their computational model.

"Stochastic network representation provides the ability to incorporate and express the uncertainties using probability maps," Conrad explained. "The method enables effective risk analysis and designing robust food defense strategies."

Future work for the team will include scaling the analysis up to the company or industry level as well as mapping commodity flows into, out of and within a geographic region.

Ultimately, NISAC intends to work with partners in business and federal and state agencies to ascertain whether the agencies have a business case for adopting the method.

If there is, the team will seek to help achieve wide acceptance of using data analysis to assess risk.

Building on techniques and knowledge developed at NISAC over the past four years, the work was initiated with funding from Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program and continued with funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

"If stochastic mapping was widely used now, perhaps outbreaks, such the recent ones involving salmonella, could be more quickly tracked down and contained. Quicker containment would benefit not only consumers but also the farmers who grow fresh food for our nation and who can be severely impacted economically by uncertainties and market restrictions on sales of their products caused by delays in pinpointing an outbreak's source," Stephen says.

For more information, visit Complex Adaptive Systems of Systems (CASoS) Engineering Initiative website, or the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The International Journal of Critical Infrastructures article, "The value of utilizing stochastic mapping of food distribution networks for understanding risks and tracing contaminant pathways," written by Conrad, W.E. Beyeler and T.J. Brown, appeared in Volume 8 of the 2012 publication.

Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin company, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies and economic competitiveness.

Senior Care in Houston TX: 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer?s Disease ? Join a Team and Walk!

Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger than yourself? Well, here?s your chance to join the walk against one of the leading causes of death in the country. The original walk, then called Memory Walk, was started in 1989 and raised nearly $150,000.

Four years later, the event went national and raised $4.5 million.

Fast forward to 2011 when the event raised over $42 million under a new name: Walk to End Alzheimer?s. If you would like to donate your time in exchange for the possibility of eliminating the disease from the face of the planet, act now before more innocent lives are lost.

What is Alzheimer?s Disease?

Named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, Alzheimer?s Disease is one of the most severe neurodegenerative disorders known to man. The illness causes amyloid plaques, or invasive masses, to form in many areas throughout the brain. These plaques kill off brain tissue slowly and cause sufferers to lose many brain functions one-by-one. The disease cannot be reversed or cured, and symptoms are usually identifiable by age 60.

One of the most common consequences of Alzheimer?s is dementia. When stricken with dementia, a person will eventually lose all cognitive abilities. It usually starts with forgetting minor things, then more severe memory loss occurs. Reasoning abilities vanish next, then physical functions are crippled. During the final stages, the victim will need care 24/7 and may not even remember who the caregiver is. Death is normally the final result after major damage is dealt to the brain.

How can I help by walking?

Walk to End Alzheimer?s is a nationwide event sponsored by the Alzheimer?s Association to fundraise for and spread awareness of the disease. It involves a 2 to 3 mile walk along a predetermined route. The funds either go directly to support the financial burdens of victims or to medical research for a cure. About 600 communities participate in the walk every year in this country, and individuals of all ages come out to show their support. By joining the march, you can make a big difference too.

While it costs you nothing to join, the Alzheimer?s Association urges you to fundraise with friends and family for this noble cause. You will be provided a number of tools to help you with your mission. If you prefer, you can donate online as well.

What should I do if I?m interested in signing up?

All that is required is that you find a walk in your area. A link on the website will take you to a page to locate the nearest walk. When you?ve selected the walk you want to participate in, decide whether you?d like to form a team, join one, or go solo. No matter which option you choose, know that you will become part of something great.

Egyptian liberals threaten to quit constitution-drafting body

CAIRO (Reuters) - A group of high profile liberal and leftwing politicians in Egypt has said it will quit the assembly charged with drafting the country's new constitution within a week unless its concerns over Islamist-influenced content in the document are addressed.

The constitution - which is being drawn up by a 100-member assembly - is meant to be the centerpiece of a new democratic Egypt after veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year and its successful drafting is being seen as a litmus test for its new Islamist rulers including President Mohamed Mursi.

Egypt can't hold an election to replace a parliament that a court declared void in June without the constitution, and until it does Mursi will continue to hold lawmaking power, an uneasy arrangement that erodes the credibility of his government.

But during a closed door meeting held late on Tuesday but that was only made public on Thursday three former presidential candidates and several leaders of the country's main non-Islamist parties said they were ready to quit the assembly or encourage their supporters to do so.

If they make good on their threat, a new parliamentary election could be delayed.

Arguing that Islamist influence meant the constitution risked ending up as a document that curbed freedom, they said they would resign in one week and take to the streets unless their concerns were addressed.

"This is a constitution that brings Egypt backwards not forward," said Ahmed al-Boraie, a former labor minister who hosted the meeting.

"We are consulting with political powers that have the same demands, if the assembly doesn't respond they will have to quit," he said.

In particular, liberals oppose a proposal that would give the seat of Sunni learning, Al-Azhar, authority similar to that of a supreme court by making it the arbiter of whether a law conforms with the principles of sharia law.

They are also unhappy with clauses that would allow journalists embroiled in publishing lawsuits to be jailed and other proposed measures which they say will curb freedom of belief and expression.

"TOO MANY ISLAMISTS"

Mursi, propelled to power by the Muslim Brotherhood, has praised the assembly, and has said he doesn't understand those who quit.

Some liberals committed to a more secular state have already boycotted the assembly and are challenging it in court, saying it includes too many Islamists. They say the Islamists want to turn Egypt into an Iran-style theocracy, a claim Islamists deny.

A court will consider a legal challenge against the assembly, which is made up of thinkers, scholars, professionals and political and religious leaders, on October 2.

Islamist politicians make up almost half the assembly while the other half includes many Islamist-sympathizers. A court dissolved a previous assembly for being dominated by Islamists and for failing to fairly represent Egypt's diverse society.

The clauses the liberals want dropped are being championed by ultraconservative Salafis. Other Islamists, such as members of the Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), are pressing for a consensus to be reached in order to keep the assembly working.

"We are very committed that everyone work together," said Farid Ismail, an FJP assembly member. "This isn't the FJP or Salafis assembly, it concerns all Egyptians."

Manal al-Teiby, a liberal member of the assembly, quit earlier this week objecting to the way it was operating. The assembly's speaker, Hossam al-Gheriany, who is also head of Egypt's Supreme Judicial Council and is seen as an independent, criticized her resignation, saying her accusations were false.

"There is a very severe attack" on the assembly, he said.

Analysts expect the new document to have a more Islamic flavor than its predecessor, including clauses prohibiting criticism of God and establishing an institution to collect zakat, or charitable donations for the poor. An existing clause banning parties based on religion is also likely to be dropped.

Amr Hamzawy, a prominent liberal politician and ex-MP, demanded that liberals lobby international parliamentarians.

"These circles, especially the European Parliament and the American Congress, can pressure their governments to convey a message to Mursi and Islamist parties that financial and economic aid are linked to building a democracy," he wrote on Wednesday in the al-Watan privately-owned newspaper.

Remarks by Secretary of State Clinton to the UNAIDS Shared ...

?

SECRETARY CLINTON:Thank you. Thank you very much. Michel, thank you, and thank you for your years of leadership. President Yayi, thank you. Everywhere I go at the UN this week where there?s an important issue being discussed, the President is here on behalf of Benin and on behalf of the AU ? (applause) ? and we thank you so much, Mr. President. And thank you, Chairman Ping. Thank you for the work that you have done in raising the visibility and the importance of health-related issues at the African Union.

And good morning to all of you excellencies and ladies and gentlemen. It is such a pleasure for me to be here at this event to demonstrate very visibly America?s commitment to shared responsibility as we all work together toward a historic goal: creating an AIDS-free generation. It is an ambitious goal that we have set, but I know we can reach it. In part, that?s because of the commitment of every one of you and the many others you represent here today. I also know because of the investments that the United States and our partners have been making for decades to understand, prevent, and treat this disease.

But there?s another reason we can foresee an AIDS-free generation, and that is because nations are stepping up to their own responsibilities to care for their own people. Because ultimately, if we are going to win the fight against AIDS, the societies that are the hardest hit will have to lead the way. That?s why the United States, under the leadership of Dr. Eric Goosby, who is the head of our PEPFAR program and a long time physician who treated some of the very first AIDS patients in San Francisco, to an advocate and manager and champion of what we all can do together ? he and I have worked closely together in the Obama Administration to make country ownership a hallmark of PEPFAR and other health programs.

But let me be very clear: Country ownership is not code for abandoning our partners. We are continuing our support, but we are reshaping our programs in ways that make them more sustainable. We want to help our partners, all of you, help set priorities and get the capacity to manage resources, develop your own plans, implement them, and eventually fund them as well. Because in the end, there must be commitment from communities and from governments across the world.

I?m often asked by those who I serve with in the Obama Administration as well as colleagues in Congress, ?Tell me, are our partners really taking ownership of the fight against AIDS?? More and more I can say without hesitation the answer to that question is yes.

I can tell people about Namibia, which now provides half of the financing for its fight against HIV/AIDS. (Applause.) Dozens of doctors and nurses who used to be supported by PEPFAR or the Global Fund are now paid by and overseen by the Namibian Government. Soon many pharmacists and nurses will make this same transition, and I thank Namibia for its leadership.

I can also tell you about South Africa, where the government now accounts for about three quarters of all HIV/AIDS spending in the country. Under the new Partnership Framework that I signed when I was in Cape Town with the Health Minister of the Zuma Administration, South Africa will pay for nearly 90 percent of its HIV/AIDS response by 2017. So let me thank President Zuma and South Africa for their commitment and leadership.

Or I can tell you about Rwanda, which has taken over the management of treatment programs at 70 medical facilities, serving over 30,000 HIV-positive patients. And Rwanda?s increased ownership and capacity then helps to free up our resources to work with Rwanda to train local healthcare workers. That is a priority that Rwanda identified, and it?s one that we are very proud to help Rwanda meet.

So Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda; they are not alone. I could cite many more examples, including many of the countries represented here. But we know that change can be difficult, and some of our practices and habits go back decades. And so often in life it is easier to keep doing the same things the same old way. So when we talk about holding each other accountable, we are really agreeing to help each other overcome inertia, to make hard choices, to do the tough work of finding new ways to work together. And that, to me, is the message that I hope you will take with you, because we have to be more innovative, creative, and smart about the resources we have and how they can best be deployed.

So to that end, the United States is pilot-testing a scorecard that will allow us and our partners to assess our joint programs and progress in building sustainable, country-owned health programs, including our efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. And I know that the members of the AU, Dr. Ping, are undertaking your own efforts along similar lines. That is a great step forward if we are serious about shared responsibility, and we should work together to learn from each other so our efforts are complementary.

So the steps that you are discussing here today represent measurable progress, but to deliver on that promise, the promise of this moment, we have to maintain the progress and build on it. If every nation devastated by HIV follows the example of many of the leaders in this room and steps up to shared responsibility, we won?t just keep up our momentum; we will accelerate our progress and move even faster toward the day when we can announce the birth of an AIDS-free generation.

Thank you all very much. (Applause.)

Food Trucks -Part II: Franchising

Last week we posted on the food truck revolution in the United States. The post dealt with broad issues related to the food truck industry. Today?s post is about the food truck in the franchise context. The Pros and Cons set out in last week?s post (Food Truck (R)evolution)?all apply in a franchise setting. The ability to test a market, the advantage of the travelling billboard and ability to move to the customers all are advantages to a franchisor. However, determining whether or not a food truck can and should be a part of your franchise is something that takes a lot of consideration and analysis. This post is meant to give a few ideas on how a food truck could work into your existing franchise system, or how it can become a franchise system all on its own. The existing franchise system can use the food truck in a number of ways. The most apparent way, at least to me, is to add a food truck as a separate franchise offering. Instead of offering a restaurant franchise in the traditional store-front sense, you can offer a prospective franchisee to become your food truck franchisee. The advantage is potential cost savings with lower overhead and start-up costs for the franchisee. If you do decide to go this route, you have the option of either wrapping in the food truck concept into your current Franchise Disclosure Document (?FDD?), or to have a separate FDD for the food truck concept. The decision on which route to take should be made with your qualified franchise attorney. If you do not want to add the food truck as a franchise offering, you could purchase a franchise truck (or several), outfit it, wrap it and offer it for ?rent? to your franchisees in an area so that they can use it for special event purposes. This increases your exposure and helps to reach out to an audience that might not know your restaurant exists. This also is a great add-on benefit to your franchisees that are looking for ways to increase business and to get their name more fully into the community. A new restaurant concept that starts as a food truck could expand their food truck business by offering food truck franchises. Unlike an existing restaurant franchise system, this type of franchise is limited to just the food truck. The advantage is that it potentially keeps franchisee costs down and gives someone the option for a (often seemingly) part-time business that the traditional store-front restaurant often does not allow for. No matter how you choose to incorporate the food truck into your business, always talk to a qualified professional, including attorneys, and those in the industry, who can help you decide the best option for your business.?

Biden campaigns in GOP-voting Virginia suburb

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden made a raw appeal to Virginia's middle class on Tuesday, blasting the GOP presidential ticket for pushing what he says is a blueprint for boosting middle-income taxes while giving trillions in tax breaks to the rich.

Biden said Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan represent a radical and obstructionist brand of conservatism that would sacrifice education and Medicare to help the wealthy.

"Look, folks, this is not your father's Republican Party," Biden said, portraying Romney as out of touch with ordinary people and Ryan as willing to wreck the nation's finances to protect the wealthy from tax increases.

Virginia Republicans countered that it's Obama's policies that will hurt economic growth and kill jobs.

"The president's proposed tax increases will not make the next four years any better than the last. They will only stifle growth and eliminate nearly 20,000 jobs in Virginia alone," said Michael Short, a spokesman for the Republican Party in Virginia. Short argued that Romney's approach would lower tax rates for all and create 340,000 jobs in the state.

Appealing directly to the moderates who decide elections in Virginia, particularly in middle-class suburbs like Chesterfield, Biden evoked his former Senate colleague from the state.

"I would be dumbfounded if former Republican Sen. John Warner said anything like that," Biden told his audience of more than 500 people in a cramped tractor barn at a county fairground. "I would be dumbfounded. I worked with him for 30 years." Warner retired in 2009 after serving five terms. He was succeeded in office by Democrat Mark R. Warner.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this isn't even Mitt Romney's father's Republican Party," Biden continued. Romney's father, George, unsuccessfully sought the 1968 GOP presidential nomination and was governor of Michigan.

Biden bored in on the Democrats' message to middle-income voters, exploiting Romney's secretly recorded comments to donors at a private fundraiser several months ago in which he said 47 percent of Americans pay no taxes, are dependent on government benefits and consider themselves victims.

"Instead of attacking people who work for a living and pay their way, Romney should be respecting their work," Biden said. "When he said it is not my job to worry about (the 47 percent) ... then whose job is it?"

Biden spoke in Chesterfield County, which has not voted Republican in statewide elections in years. But Chesterfield, a suburb of Richmond, is rich in the middle-income families both presidential campaigns are courting.

Recent polls in the battleground state place Obama slightly ahead of Romney. Obama won Virginia in 2008, becoming the first Democrat since Lyndon B. Johnson to gain victory here.

Baby boomers getting older, Alzheimer's getting worse

News 12 at 11 o'clock / Friday, Sept. 21, 2012

EVANS, Ga. -- The disease already affects more than 5,000,000 Americans, but as the baby boomers are getting older, that number is about to rise.

"We need to get it as a country, because if we don't, our health care system is probably not set up to care for all the things that are going to happen to the baby boomers that are going to age," said Alzheimer's Association Development Director Dee Dee Kurilla.

They call it the long goodbye. Alzheimer's is the heartless disease that robs you of your mind, and millions of Americans are suffering through it.

"It's the sixth leading cause of death, and there's no cure," Kurilla said.

More than 200,000 of those affected live in Georgia, and approximately 14,000 of those are living in the 17 counties that make up the Augusta region.

Janeabeth Wells' mother is only 69 years old and is already suffering from early onset Alzheimer's disease.

"She does not recognize me as her daughter or her grandchildren, so it's pretty difficult. I think the cruelest thing about Alzheimer's is it actually takes the person away from you while they're still physically here," Wells said.

Wells says care taking for her mother is a 24/7 job.

"When she gets up in the morning, it's kind of like having a toddler at home. She does need constant supervision, constant care, we can't leave her alone any longer," Wells said.

Just last month 80-year-old Effie Lou Parks, who suffers from Alzheimer's, wandered off from her home in Appling. After eight hours of searching, she was finally returned home.

"We just thank God that she's home, and we just urge everybody if you have an Alzheimer's patient or anything, just keep a good eye on them and just protect them as much as you can," her family said.

Her story has a happy ending, but sadly, for most Alzheimer's patients, that's not the case.

With no cure in sight, Wells says coping is about knowledge -- understanding the disease -- and love.

"There's no happy ending at all. The only thing you can do is love them," Wells said.

By 2050, the number of people with Alzheimer's in Georgia is expected to triple to as many as 16 million people.

With depressing figures like that, the Alzheimer's Association is trying to spread some hope and knowledge by raising awareness and helping families understand this devastating disease.

They have a pretty high profile event coming up called the Walk to End Alzheimer's on Nov. 3.

It's a 2-to-3-mile walk that starts at the Augusta Commons.

It helps raise funds and awareness for the disease, but mostly it's about showing the families they're not alone.

Football viewers: Baseball races are worth watching

2 cents

With football season in full swing and the Jaguars, Gators and Seminoles winning over the weekend, I?m sure sports fans in Jacksonville are ready to get some rest this week before they cheer on their favorite football teams next weekend.

I?m sorry to break the news, but there?s no time to rest.

Take off your football jerseys and put on your baseball caps because this is the final week of the Major League Baseball regular season and it might be one of the wildest weeks ever.

The addition of an extra Wild Card in each league means more cities are still in the playoff hunt and more people are still paying attention.

I?ve always liked the exclusivity of the MLB playoffs and I?ve always felt the baseball regular season means a lot more than it does in other major sports.

But when I heard about the new Wild Card format I thought it might water down the regular season and take some of the excitement out of the playoffs. Now that the final week is here, I realize that?s not the case.

It?s not like Bud Selig is letting eight teams from each league into the playoffs for a seven-game first-round series (like in the NBA and NHL). It?s just one extra team from each league and that team has to win a game before they?re allowed into a full-blown playoff series.

Not watered down at all.

The 162-game season is still my favorite regular season in sports and although the NFL offers a great viewing experience, their regular season doesn?t offer games on a daily basis (not that I?m suggesting that).

But the baseball season is too long, right? It?s hard to pay attention to the games in April because they don?t really matter, right?

Wrong and Wrong.

Just ask the Yankees, Orioles, Rays, White Sox, Tigers, Rangers, Athletics, Angels, Braves, Phillies, Cardinals, Brewers, Pirates, Dodgers or Diamondbacks if they wish they could have a few April losses back?

All of those teams are still trying to get into the playoffs and they?ll tell you every win counts the same.

The season is long, but at least it gives sports fans something to watch while they wait for football.

But fans can?t wait to forget about baseball as soon as football starts.

I promise football isn?t going anywhere so everyone should give the boys of summer one more week of attention, then we?ll have the playoffs to watch and the new format should entertain everyone.

Oh, and Miguel Cabrera has a shot at the Triple Crown. I?ll tune in for that.

Flag as offensive

The Sustainable University by Stephen Sterling, Larch Maxey and Heather Luna

?This is a must-read for every Vice-Chancellor, President and University Trustee of the world's 17,000 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). While less than two percent of the world's population will graduate from an HEI, these graduates will form the vast majority of the future decision makers in the private and public sectors and civil society at large. As such, our HEIs are crucial entry points in the global attempt to create a more sustainable future. Our current global HEI leaders and their respective professional organizations have a major new responsibility-addressing sustainability. Here is their handbook to ?The University of the Future?.? ? Charles Hopkins, UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development, York University, Canada

?If we choose to survive, and come to live in tune with the biosphere?s processes and limits, then universities will have made an indispensible contribution. But, to do this, they will first need to change and evolve. This is a welcome book about such processes, and one that all involved in higher education should read.? ? William Scott, Professor Emeritus,University of Bath, UK

?This book is of great importance as it clearly illustrates which path universities still need to follow towards sustainability. However, the book also indicates, how much progress has already been made by some universities, and this is encouraging!? ? Gerd Michelsen, UNESCO Chair ?Higher Education for Sustainable Development?, Leuphana University of L?neburg, Germany

?The Sustainability University is an important contribution to the ongoing conversation about how higher education in all its aspects can transform to help create a sustainable future.? ? Geoff Chase, Dean, Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Center for Regional Sustainability, San Diego State University, USA

?The contributors to this book are the people I believe in. They are the honest, courageous, humble, smart and tenacious agents of change toiling at the front lines in humankind?s epic struggle to save itself. The quality of mind and heart woven into these pages is beautiful in its authenticity and ambition. The effect is a chorus of shared vision, shared struggle and shared insight worthy of any readers time.? ? Leith Sharp, Founding Director of Harvard University?s Office for Sustainability and Founding Chair of the Sustainable Futures Academy, USA

?This volume contains a wealth of experiences and ideas that will help higher-education institutions make a necessary and greater contribution to creating a more sustainable society. Universities should not only act as agents of change, but need to change themselves if they are to be sufficiently effective in this regard. This book shows us how.? ? Pamela S. Chasek, Professor, Government Department, and Director, International Studies Program, Manhattan College, USA

?Like few other social institutions, universities have the freedom and the power to choose to be models of sustainable practices and relationships, and to make it part of their core business. The Sustainable University provides the rationale, strategies and exemplars for acting upon a positive choice.? ? John Fien, Professor of Sustainability, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia
