A group of students from the Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) charter school, including Hudson residents, honored the nation?s soldiers by singing ?God Bless America? at Marlborough?s Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11. They also painted numerous signs to show their support for America?s veterans.
Although it marked the third time AMSA students participated in the ceremony, it was the first time for a vocal performance. The students assembled in front of the Doughboy statue on Main Street, a memorial to World War I veterans. After their first performance, the students sang the song a second time, and invited parade attendees to join them. The performance moved a number of people and some veterans in the parade broke formation to thank the students.
The performance was orchestrated by Mark Vital, a veteran and a middle school English teacher at AMSA. Vital lamented that many people have forgotten the significance of Veterans Day, and said he considers the parade an opportunity to teach his students about its importance, an example of what he calls ?social curriculum outside the walls.?
Vital is known for giving his students opportunities to get involved in the community ? he and his students have attended community plays, raised money for breast cancer research, and caroled at local senior centers. Last year, they even planned an ?I love to read carnival? at a local day care center to encourage children to start reading, according to the school.
Vital said he considers himself lucky to teach such an outstanding group of students who are willing to volunteer their time for such endeavors.
