Test Driving GAIN Fitness, The App That Turns Your iPhone Into A Personal Trainer [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-04-29 at 12.08.13 PMSummer is on its way, and self-improvement is on everyone's minds -- so it seems like each day I hear about a new must-have app focused on fitness, health, nutrition, or the "quantified self" in general. And now that the tech startup scene is hotter than ever, many of these apps are backed by serious investors and have big plans for the future. Take GAIN Fitness. The San Francisco-based company, headed up by former college athlete and ex-Googler Nick Gammell, makes web and mobile apps that provide personalized workout routines and track users' progress as they go through them. It sounds solid on paper, but with all the options out there we wanted to look a bit closer at the company and its product. So we met up with Gammell at a gym in downtown San Francisco to talk to him about GAIN Fitness and test drive the app ourselves.

Switched On: Big kicks, not all for starters

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

The end of last week's Switched On left doubt for the future of dedicated devices that tread on the turf of smartphones. After all, funding is key to every major new product initiative and, despite the vast fortunes of many Silicon Valley engineers that have been accumulated via IPOs and acquisitions, few wish to take on the risk of fronting a new consumer device themselves.(In 2007, the handheld FlipStart PC was hatched from FlipStart Labs, funded by Vulcan Ventures, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.)

Most venture capitalists abhor the device business; it is a rare device that makes it to the spotlight of startup debutante balls such as DEMO, TechCrunch Disrupt, or Launch. Even most of the 94 companies at CES' Eureka Park were not developing end-user devices Where, then, can a device entrepreneur go for funding and pick up some publicity in the process?

LG gives away 2,000 specially modified phones for the blind

Skipping on the LTE, HD IPS screen or dual-processor is usually not a recipe that will land your phone on the pages of Engadget. But, these LG-LU2700Ss are not just any unspectacular flip phone. The handset has been specially modified for use by the blind and visually impaired. The manual is printed in braille and, rather than require the constant mashing of buttons, the phone is controlled primarily through voice commands. 2,000 of the devices were given away as part of the company's donation program. Now if only they would mass produce them, LG would earn some serious cred.

LG Optimus True HD LTE's European assault begins in Portugal, Germany and Sweden

Image

While the latest LTE and HD equipped addition to LG's Optimus line has already landed across Asia (Korea, Japan) and North America (US - AT&T, US - Verizon, Canada) under a few different names, the newly rebranded Optimus True HD LTE is finally prepared for a European debut. As seen by the flags flying above, this week LG will begin rolling out to Portugal, Germany and Sweden, with Britain and France on deck for the second half of the year when LTE service is available. The other flags present represent further Asian rollouts in Hong Kong and Singapore. The plan, described in the Korean press release linked below, is apparently to make LG synonymous with LTE, although we can't see how renaming its current dual-core standard bearer every other week is helping.

Walmart Adds ?Pay With Cash? For Online Shoppers At Walmart.com

Pay with CashWalmart.com is launching a new way to checkout, targeting customers who don't have credit or debit cards...or money in the bank for that matter. The company is now allowing customers to buy online and pay with cash. The change reflects the current economic conditions in the U.S., as Walmart states (citing FDIC figures) that one in four U.S. households is "unbanked" or "underbanked" - meaning they rely on cash for their purchases. In addition, Walmart says the majority of its own in-store transactions are cash or debit, and only 15% are paid for using credit cards.

Bobby Brown Pleads Out DUI Arrest

Bobby Brown has reached a deal with prosecutors that will keep the singer out of jail.

Bobby at Whitney's Funeral

As first reported by TMZ, Brown pleaded "no contest" today to one charge of driving with a blood alcohol content over .08, stemming from an incident in late March when cops pulled him over for driving erratically.

In exchange, attorneys dropped the DUI count and Brown was sentenced to 36 months of probation and one day he's already served in county prison.

The artist has been in the news far more than anyone would like since the tragic death of his ex-wife, Whitney Houston. Brown made the wrong kind of headlines for leaving her funeral early, and insiders claim he's considering a memoir about his marriage to the legend.
